Cultivating Cultural Humility | Chin Ru Foo | Webinar

The Topic

In this webinar, Chin Ru Foo will discuss the importance of Cultural Humility and how the visual arts can be a powerful way of inhabiting a mindset of learning and growth.

Too often, we learn about other cultures whilst retaining the idea that our culture is dominant and 'the best'.

Discussions around issues of  Diversity, Equity & Inclusion can often take place from a  'Western dominant' lens.

Cultivating cultural humility requires us to believe in our interconnectedness across geographies.

Re-orientation is key. But How?

Referencing the 60th Venice Art Biennale titled 'Foreigners Everywhere', Chin Ru invites us to consider how art can be a powerful medium from which to engage with these questions.

Art gives us permission not to have all the answers.

It circumvents thinking in a binary good-bad way.

It teaches us that we can't apply individual solutions to collective problems.

It invites us to look awry.

Join us to explore how we might see our interconnectedness across geographies - from a place of curiosity and creativity.

The Agenda

In the first half of the webinar, Chin Ru will make her presentation and facilitate initial responses.

In the second half, we'll move into a reflection-application session:

- 'Composting': experienced peers work the material in small groups to sprout new ideas;

- 'Weaving': attendees gather to collectively reflect and question, weaving our experiences together;

- Discuss how we will apply learnings to our personal practice in Reflection Application Pairs (RAPs).
